Carolina Keepsake*

NEW FOR 2017
Hosta Name:
CAROLINA KEEPSAKE
Hosta Image:
Color:
Gold
Hosta Description:
Carolina Keepsake is a hybrid of Corkscrew x June from Bob Solberg of Green Hill Farm, Franklinton, North Carolina. It was the convention plant given to all the attendees of the 2015 American Hosta Society Convention held in Raleigh, North Carolina, (the convention was hosted by Bob and Nancy Solberg.) We purchased this plant from Bob and Nancy in the spring of 2015 and planted it beside Bob's spectacular First Blush in almost full sun. As visitors to our gardens went gaga over the amount of red in First Blush they did a second take when they seen the glow of Carolina Keepsake. We managed to get a few plants last year and will have a very limited number for sale for 2017. This vibrant plant has stayed a bright gold for the last 2 summers for us now. In the photo you can see how bright it is, even with a few rabbit holes chewed in it. Guessing by the parentage that it will be a medium sized hosta.

First Blush *

NEW FOR 2016
Hosta Name:
FIRST BLUSH 12 inches high x 24 inches wide
Hosta Image:
Color:
green / red
Hosta Description:
First Blush is the first hosta with this much red in the leaf to date. Hybridizer Bob Solberg worked on this cross for many many years and when news broke of its introduction, his facebook page for Green Hill Farm had 4200 hits within the first 5 days. Parentage of this hosta comtains many crosses with one of its last ones being Beet Salad as its parent. This write up of Bobs describes it perfectly : 'First Blush' not only has green leaves with red petioles that extend into the leaf blade but also a thin red margin around the leaf, similar but much more dramatic than its parent 'Beet Salad'. However, the most exciting thing about 'First Blush' is that in spring the leaf between the veins will start to "blush" red from the tip of the leaf down toward the base. " The two photos on the right are of our First Blush plant in its first year in our garden, still showing red in September.
